Dear Friends and Colleagues,
My interest in increasing law school diversity first began when I was applying to law school as an undergraduate student. During that time, I was shocked to find that the representation of people of color in law schools was well below the current racial/ethnic demographics of the United States.
While there was great acknowledgment within the legal community that diversity was an important and pressing issue, I found that the solutions of its two most influential institutions—law schools and law firms—to be very limited and individualistic.
For many law schools, their solutions usually centered on increasing diversity at their own respective institutions, competing with their peers for the small pool of people of color that were admitted into law school. Likewise, for many law firms, their solutions centered mostly on increasing diversity at their own respective institutions, competing with their peers for the small pool of people of color that were graduating from law school.
Well, after much thinking, I decided to act.
I decided to create an organization that focuses on increasing the overall number of people of color entering law school. Specifically, I wanted to create an organization that proactively educates young people color about the profession, with the goal of inspiring and encouraging many of them to go to law school and eventually become attorneys.
Thus, I implore you to take advantage of our services—we serve young people of color in cities all across the country. In addition, if you have any recommendations, suggestions or comments, please contact me personally—we always know that we can do better.
While creating In Legal Color was a great challenge, executing the vision will be an even greater one. Thus, I encourage you to get involved in any way you can. You can become a volunteer, make a private donation, provide company sponsorship or simply recommend an organization that would benefit from our services. We welcome it all.
Thank you for your interest and I hope to hear from you in the near future!
Sincerely,
Adewale A. Oduye, Esq.
